From Bf2k+@VERT to All on Friday, August 29, 2025 08:08:04
I am migrating my bbses from an old PC to a new PC. The old PC runs Windows 7 and the new PC is running Windows 11 Pro. I am running Synchronet 3.19b on the old PC.

I am trying to install 3.19b onto the new Win 11 PC and getting the error 0xc000007b.

I have copied the DLLs mscvr100.dll and vcruntime140.dll to the new machine because I got errors saying they were missing when I first tried to run Synch.

I also installed the vcredist files from 2005 thru 2022.

Still getting the error... any ideas?

(oh the error comes from sbbsctrl.exe)

First, as an experiment, trying running sbbs.exe instead of sbbsctrl.exe and see what if any error you get and report it back here

It'd also be useful to know what console/log output comes out of sbbs.exe before a crash.

Win11 is 64-bit. And 32-bit DLLs load just find on 64-bit Windows. It could be something to do with trying to run 16-bit programs however (and 64-bit editions of Windows don't include a 16-bit compatible subsystem). Maybe some kind of event? <shrug>

i'm not sure if it lets you install 32bit on a 64bit platform for VC distributable.

Synchronet for Windows is currently 32-bit only, but installs and runs fine on 64-bit Windows (without any special magic). The only "gotcha" is 16-bit DOS program support which is documented pretty well on wiki.synchro.net.

sbbs.exe on Windows just logs to the screen/console. You should be able copy/paste from that console into a message here.

You could also try a fresh install of Synchronet v3.19b on that same system to confirm it's not a system-level issue. i.e. it's something to do with that particular *configuration* of Synchronet that's not compatible with the new system.

sbbs.exe on Windows just logs to the screen/console. You should be able copy/paste from that console into a message here.

If you mean in the main synchronet window, it never loads. It aborts with the error immediately.

And this is a completely new installation of 3.19b on a completely new install of Windows 11 on a newly built PC. I have not even attempted to move my bbs over to this machine.

well do what rob says and collect the error msgs in the console.
then backup everything and then 'transplant' the files you need from github
or run synchronet upgrade executable from the sbbs site.

personally i think your best bet is to run your bbs in a 32bit windows 10 vm. if you need an .iso, i have one here if you need it. I just installed one
    last weekend.

I'd love to. But if I understand you correctly, the 'console' is the Synchronet Control panel and it never loads. The errors pops up upon execution and immediately shuts down.

I could load Process Monitor, run sbbs and then capture that PM log and send that. Would that help?

The 'console' is not the Synchronet Control Panel. It's the Windows command prompt. Open that, 'cd' to your 'sbbs\exec' directory, and manually type "sbbs".

I think I had a similar issue while I was installing SBBS on a Windows 11 Insider Preview on a virtual machine.

I did a couple of experiments, but what I found out was I was installing the wrong version of the VC redist files; you should download and install the x86 instead of the x64 ones (but in my case, I just installed both; they installed together nicely and I didn't have problems with my SBBS executables.)

When I was still had the x64 version installed, I wondered why the dll files are not found even though I saw the .dll files in C:\Windows\System32; then I tried copying the said DLL files in the C:\Sbbs\Exec directory, and an error similar to that occurred, regardless of the SBBS executable I run (sbbsctrl.exe, sbbs.exe, jsexec.exe).

After installing the x86 version, and deleting the .dll files in C:\Sbbs\Exec, it started working.

Could you confirm that you have only installed the dll files via the Microsoft installer, and not copied arbitrarily the .dll files to your SBBS installation directories?

    Hope this helps.
