IIRC, the alt groups were also a lot less likely to be moderated than, say, a comp group.
The bbs scene these days is so much err . . . smaller.
It was never too big though, was it? Each BBS was "local", so I would imagi you would get to know whos who on your local BBS's.

It was pretty big here (Phoenix). There were a LOT of different BBSes, each with their own group of callers that were pretty different crowds. You still get that today if you hop around between different types of systems.
I used Agent exclusively, from day one 'til newsgroups were no longer a thing. <sigh>...I miss the old Usenet.

i also used that other one that someone else mentioned.
I never liked thunderbird, even for an email client. it just seems to buggy to me and i don't like the interface. I have claws running just to keep all my email accts active.
I despise Thunderbird. I think it is too big for its own good. That said, if you want a solution in which you can integrate Carddav contacts and Caldav schedules at cheap/zero cost then you don't have many options.
