  • Streaming boxes

    I used to use an amazon fire stick, but that had limited application support. Then I also used a Roku box from 2019, but I was tired of it. I ended up getting an Apple TV and it has served me well since 2023.

    I like Roku.

    I think Roku is good (and one of my streaming boxes is a Roku Ultra, which is a quite capable streaming device). I thnk the Nvidia Shield Pro may be overall the best though, in terms of codecs supported and streaming capability. I have an Nvidia Shield Pro connected to one of my TVs, and sometimes where Roku might struggle with something from my Plex server, the Nvidia Shield Pro usually streams it without a problem. The Nvidia Shield Pro also seems to be able to stay connected to wifi better than my other devices.

    Also, if you like retro gaming, there's a RetroArch app for the Nvidia Shield Pro that can emulate old game consoles; you can also use a bluetooth game controller with it.

    Cool, haven't used/seen the Nvidia Shield Pro. I have played with Plex
    a little but find it more work than it's worth, when anything I would
    want is already available from one streaming source or another, and the storage space required for a decent collection is painful.

    I do like some occassional retro gaming, which I usually do in Steam
    these days. I have a working old computer with DOS and games on it, but
    it's in another room and somehow I don't use it much. I've always found
    the console emulator mechanics to be more work than I want to put into
    it. In a couple of years when I retire, will likely re-visit all that.



    ... Toto, I don't think we're in DOS any more...

    I guess I'm the opposite. Though I've watched some things on streaming services, there isn't a whole lot on streaming services I've watched. I don't like always relying on streaming services anyway, as they sometimes remove content. I tend to buy physical media for things I like, and I'll rip it and put it on my Plex server. And unless you have a huge collection of stuff, I don't think it's all that painful.

    if you say so. i dont know much about apple tv. isnt it very limited since it's apple? wouldn't an android 'tv' computer be better and have more options?

    What I read the other day was that the Fire TV 4k Max (which was on sale for $30 I think recently) has the latest and greatest audio codecs that none of the other streaming appliances have yet.

    Being a Kodi fan, android-based stuff like Fire TV works better for me than Roku.

    It looks like the Fire Stick 4K Max is a copule years newer than the Nvidia Shield Pro..
